- Of all school fires around 50% are as a result of arson.
- Three schools per day suffer an arson attack.
- The majority of school arson occurs outside of school-time hours.
- However the frequency of school-time has increased over the last few years.
- School arson can cost between £70-100 million a year, money that could be far more effectively spent on your education!
Who, when and where
- According to Fire Brigade records around 90% of all school arson attacks are carried out by children under the age of 18.
- Most school arson is committed by pupils or ex-pupils.
- Most school-time arson occurs between 1.00pm and 1.59pm.
- The most common places inside a school where arson happens are the cloakrooms, storage rooms and in the classroom.
Other areas of concern
Bins: should be locked away where possible. Littering your schools can be a fire hazard and ruin your environment.
Science labs: Contain heating equipment and flammable liquids, a teacher should always be present when using the apparatus.
