Reducing risks dilemma ...

There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk and impact of fire.

The risk of fire in your school or home will depend on a number of factors related to the location and structure of the building. For instance if your school is in an area where there are serious crime problems. It will also be at risk from arson.

However while some of these factors may seem beyond your control, there are always some things you can do to reduce the risks.
Smoke alarms: Make sure smoke alarms are fitted in your home and they are tested weekly.

Security: Ensure that doors and windows are secured and lockable. Fences and gates prove to be a good deterrent, as can external lighting.

Escape plans: Even when a fire is not prevented you can reduce the risk to life through practiced escape plans.

Flammable materials: Do not leave flammable materials near to candles or heat sources. Never leave candles unattended. Make sure rubbish is not left around – dispose of old furniture properly.
