Arson is deliberate fire-setting. The social and economic implications to society are extensive. Research shows that every day 3 schools in the UK suffer an arson attack. Fire is not a toy, it causes damage to property, and can cause severe injury or death.

The Law
Criminal Damage Act 1971 An offence committed under this Act by destroying or damaging property by fire shall be charged as arson. Where the defendant is found guilty of an offence they will be liable to life imprisonment on indictment; and where life is not endangered, six months imprisonment and/or fine summarily.

Arsonists
There are several reasons why arsonist set fires, ranging from vengeance to attention seeking to curiosity. Signs of an unhealthy interest in fire might be:
  • Small burn holes in carpets or clothes
  • Charred material in waste bins
  • Hidden matches or lighters
  • Unusual fascination with fire
If you notice these signs in members of your family or friends it is important that you tell someone: teachers, parents or your local Fire Service so that they can intervene before its too late.


Victims
