Get Out Safely

Comprehension exercise

In a fire it is important to think and act quickly. Read the story below and answer the questions using the knowledge you have learned about how to get out safely.

Jimmy woke up to the sound of his smoke alarm going off. He quickly got out of bed, and woke his brother Robert.

Jimmy and Robert went to the door, feeling it with the back of their hands to see if it was hot. It wasn’t. They opened the door and made their way to the landing where their parents were. The whole family walked downstairs to the hallway.

Jimmy’s mum told the boys to get low to the floor where the air is easier to breathe and crawl to the front door. Jimmy took the door keys from their hook and unlocked the door.

Once outside the family crossed the street to get a safe distance away from the house. Jimmy’s dad used his mobile phone to dial 999 and call the fire brigade. They waited for the fire brigade to arrive and did not go back inside the house
