The APB kid’s pages (KIDS ZONE) are intended to provide an educational resource for use in the classroom and at home. Fires started by children aged 7-11 years old are generally a consequence of curiosity about fire and not of malicious intent. For this reason these pages concentrate on more on fire safety rather than arson prevention specifically.

Get out safely
In a fire it is important to think and act quickly. Children should be taught to get out of fires immediately, not stop to collect toys or other possessions, and never to return to a burning building for any reason.

Escape planning
Fires can be loud and scary. The smoke may make it hard to see where you are. All this can make it hard to think clearly, so it's best to make your escape plan before you need it. Children should be encouraged to find different ways to get out of each room, and to agree a meeting place a safe distance away.

Calling the Fire Brigade
If a fire breaks out children must be able to call the fire brigade and give a clear explanation of where the fire is. Children should be able to give their name, address and postcode and to inform the operator if anyone is hurt. They should also be aware that they do not need money to call 999.

LESSONS
Each fire brigade reports the details of fires to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister who every year produce United Kingdom Fire Statistics. The lessons in this section use these statistics to create numeracy exercises suitable for KS2 students, which also educate children about the effects of fire and arson.
