100,000 pupils each year have their education disrupted by arson attacks.

The APB kid’s pages (KIDS ZONE) are intended to provide an educational resource for use in the classroom and at home. Children will receive practical advice on fire safety, planning escape routes and calling the fire brigade. The teachers’ notes accompany the pages, offering activities which can be completed on an individual basis, in groups, or as an entire class.

Having published our Key Stage 2 resource in Summer 2004, we are happy to introduce our Key Stage 1 resource. A resource for Key Stage 3 pupils will be available in early 2005.

It is our hope that on reading these pages, teachers, parents and carers will gain an understanding of the problem of arson and use the resources provided to pass this understanding on to children so that they are less likely to become victims/ offenders of arson in the future.

If you are concerned that a child in your care may be at risk of committing arson, the APB’s Juvenile Firesetting: How to Reduce the Risk provides advice on spotting the danger signs and teaching children about fire safety.

Malicious damage, false alarms and minor incidents of fire-setting are key indicators that your school is at risk of future arson attacks. If your school has suffered a deliberate fire, however small, or malicious damage such as graffiti, you should consider this a warning sign. How to Combat Arson in Schools provide advice on security and practical fire safety measures. Or, use the online Arson Risk Assessment to assess the risk to your school.

Are we getting it right? We would welcome feedback on our site. Please email us your comments to arsonpreventionbureau@abi.org.uk
