LESSON 3: Numeracy Exercise
The Fire Brigade investigate and record how each fire starts. Using the table above answer the following questions:
What percentage of accidental school fires were started by youth and adults?
How would you show this as a fraction?
What percentage of deliberately started school fires (arson) were started by people under the age of 18?
Which age group is responsible for approximately two thirds of deliberately started (arson) school fires?
Which age group is responsible for approximately one quarter of deliberately started school fires?
Suggested Supporting class discussion:
What is the difference between an accidental fire and a deliberately started fire? Can you give examples of each?
What is another name for a deliberately started fire?
There are 3 school fires every day in the UK. What do you think about that? How would you feel if your school was 1 of the 3 today?
About a quarter of deliberate school fires (arson) are started by children under 7 years old. What do you think teachers, parents or carers should do to stop this?
Suggested supporting class activity:
In small groups make up a role play around one of the following:
What would you do if you saw your younger brother or sister playing with matches?
What would you do if you saw one of your friends or an older child playing with matches?
