Calling the Fire Brigade

Every year over 400 people in the UK are killed in house fires

If a fire breaks out children must be able to call the fire brigade and give a clear explanation of where the fire is.

Whilst it is unusual for children of this age to be in the house alone, it is conceivable that they may be needed to call the fire brigade if a parent/ carer is injured or trapped inside. It may also be the case that adults in the house do not speak English and the child is required to make the call. In either case, any information the child can give will help the fire brigade to act quickly.

Children should be able to give their name, address and postcode and to inform the operator if anyone is hurt. They should also be aware that they do not need money to call 999.

Suggested classroom exercise:

Brightspark house picture and accompanying questions.
In the teachers notes, this should appear as a printable question sheet, again with the picture visible at the same time as the questions.
